The Mistakes I Made (So You Don’t Have To!) When Selling Digital Products
Share
Why Did I Start?
Being a small business, I wanted to leverage my knowledge of both information technology and a love of design. You see, I wanted to maximize the business-related items that I needed, e.g., flyers, designs for my custom shirts, custom templates, etc. So, I invested in myself and took several courses over a period of many months to learn. Then I decided, if I am having this struggle, then there must be other people who have the same issue!
I didn’t have a blueprint when I started selling digital products—I had to learn through trial and error. And YouTube is extremely limited. Some lessons were tough, but they made me stronger. If you’re starting or struggling, here are the biggest mistakes I made so you can avoid them.
Why I Wasted Time on the Wrong Designs and How I Found My Niche
When I started, I created whatever I thought was “cute” without researching what people wanted. Plus, I jumped on the ever-evolving trends in the crafting world. Not a good idea! Some designs sold, but most didn’t. I wasted time making things that weren’t marketable. Eventually, I learned to research trends, study my audience, and test my ideas before investing too much time in them.
Pricing Struggles: Too Low, Too High, and Finally Getting It Right
At first, I priced my digital products way too low, afraid that no one would buy them otherwise. Then I overcorrected and priced it too high, scaring off potential buyers. I finally found a sweet spot by considering the value, competition, and the pricing psychology that makes customers feel comfortable purchasing.
Avoid my mistakes and start strong with the right tools and strategy!
